Alchemy Symbols
Basic Morality Of The Play Is:
- The battle over the spirit, waged by a Good Angel and a Bad Angel. The Good and Bad Angel also is a symbolic aspect of Faustus' own character. The former standing for order, virtue, and goodness and the latter standing for his unbridled passions and desires.
- The parade of the Seven Deadly Sins (Pride, Covetousness, Wrath, Envy, Gluttony, Sloth and Lechery). His surrender to the Deadly Sins leads to his path to Hell.
- The potential for salvation, which exists until Faustus finally surrenders to despair and gives up all hope of being able to repent.
The symbols on the rug that Faustus is standing on are symbols in alchemy (a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life). Starting at the top left and making a clockwise circle around the rug they stand for:
- Cancer
- Gemini
- Taurus
- Aries
- Soot or Vinegar (Too Blurry To See Well)
- Moon
- Mercury
- Venus
- Sun
- Antimony
- The Letter V
- Saturn
- Talcum
- Tin
