The letter from Penny has a change in language about mid way down. She suddenly says:

"I like to use fresh soap. That Vernon guy got around to telling me what help I can be. Me, imagine whatever four."

We know from another piece of evidence in the case, the magazine pieces, that we are looking for numbers, which Penny specifically spells the "for" at the end of her sentence as "four" instead. Using every fourth word in the sentences we find a hidden message from Penny to us:

"I like to use fresh soap. That Vernon guy got around to telling me what help I can be. Me, imagine whatever four."
